Buying from a Private Seller
When buying a car from a private party in Florida, you must handle the title transfer and registration yourself at the county tax collector's office.
Original Title
Must be properly filled out by the seller, including purchase price, date, and odometer reading.
Bill of Sale (Recommended)
Form HSMV 82050 is recommended to officially remove the seller's liability.
Proof of Florida Insurance
Must show minimum PIP and PDL coverage from a Florida-licensed agent.
Application for Certificate of Title
Form HSMV 82040, completed by the buyer.
New Florida Residents
If you are moving to Florida, you have 10 days to register your out-of-state vehicle after establishing residency.
Out-of-State Title or Registration
Bring your original title. If financed, bring your current registration and lender info.
VIN Verification
Form HSMV 82042, must be completed by a FL police officer, DMV examiner, or FL notary.
Florida Insurance
Your out-of-state insurance will not be accepted. You must switch to a FL policy first.
Important Note on Taxes
Florida charges a 6% state sales tax plus a local county discretionary sales surtax (usually 1-1.5%) on vehicle purchases. If you buy from a dealer, they will collect this. If you buy private party, you will pay it at the DMV when registering.
