Vehicle Subscriptions Guide
What you need to know about the hidden monthly costs of modern car features.
The New Normal
Automakers are increasingly moving features that used to be standard or one-time purchases behind monthly paywalls. Always ask your dealer which features require an active subscription before buying.
Connected Services
$8 to $25 per month
Almost all new vehicles come with an app that allows you to lock/unlock doors, check fuel/battery levels, and remote start the car.
- Often includes a 1-3 year free trial.
- Includes emergency SOS services.
- Required for smartphone remote-start features.
Navigation & Traffic
$10 to $15 per month
Built-in factory navigation systems increasingly require a subscription for real-time traffic updates, map updates, and point-of-interest searches.
- Can often be bypassed by using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (free).
- Some EVs require this for battery pre-conditioning routing.
Advanced Driver Assistance
$20 to $200 per month
Features like hands-free highway driving (e.g., GM Super Cruise, Ford BlueCruise, Tesla FSD) require expensive ongoing subscriptions.
- Requires active cellular connection.
- May require hardware upgrades over time.
- Some brands allow a one-time lifetime purchase option.
Hardware Paywalls
$10 to $25 per month
A controversial trend where the physical hardware is installed in the car, but deactivated via software until you pay.
- Heated seats (attempted by BMW, later reversed in some markets).
- Remote start via the key fob (Toyota).
- Increased horsepower or acceleration unlocks (Mercedes, Polestar).
Questions to Ask Your Dealer
- 1.Which features on this specific trim require an ongoing subscription?
- 2.How long is the complimentary trial period for connected services?
- 3.Will the key fob remote start continue to work if I don't subscribe to the app?
- 4.Does the built-in navigation require a subscription to function at all, or just for live traffic?
