First-Time Car Buyer Guide
Buying your first car can be overwhelming. Follow this interactive step-by-step timeline to shop with confidence and avoid common mistakes.
Step 1: Set Your Budget
Determine how much you can afford before falling in love with a car.
A good rule of thumb is keeping your total car payment, insurance, and maintenance under 15-20% of your take-home pay. Use our Affordability Calculator to see what price range fits your monthly budget.
Step 2: Get Pre-Approved
Secure financing from a bank or credit union before visiting the dealer.
Getting pre-approved gives you a firm interest rate to compare against the dealer's financing. It essentially turns you into a cash buyer and removes the stress of negotiating monthly payments.
Step 3: Research & Locate
Find the right make and model, then locate it locally.
Look up reliability ratings, safety scores, and total cost of ownership. Once you narrow it down to 2-3 models, check local dealership inventory to see what's actually available in your area.
Step 4: Test Drive & Inspect
Never skip the test drive or the pre-purchase inspection (PPI).
Drive the car on highways and local roads. If you're buying used, always pay a trusted independent mechanic to perform a Pre-Purchase Inspection before signing anything.
Step 5: Negotiate the Out-the-Door Price
Focus on the total price, not the monthly payment.
Dealers can manipulate monthly payments by extending the loan term. Always negotiate the 'Out-the-Door' price, which includes all taxes, title, and dealer fees.
Step 6: Sign & Drive
Review the paperwork, secure insurance, and take the keys.
Read the contract carefully to ensure no unexpected add-ons (like extended warranties or fabric protection) were slipped in. Make sure your insurance is active before driving off the lot.
