    Vehicle Title Transfer Guide

Step-by-step checklist for safely transferring a vehicle title in a private sale.

Step 1: Seller Signs the Title

The seller must officially release ownership on the physical title document.

Do not use white-out or cross things out. It voids the title.

No tenths of a mile. Required for vehicles under 10 years old.

If there was a loan, the seller must provide an official lien release document from the bank.

    Step 2: Buyer Completes Information

    Step 3: Supplemental Documents

Includes VIN, date, price, and signatures from both parties. Required in Florida.

Proof of Florida insurance is required to register the vehicle.

    Florida DMV Tips

Plates stay with the seller. In Florida, the license plate belongs to the owner, not the car. The seller must remove their plate.

Temporary Tags. The buyer can get a temporary tag from the DMV to drive the car while waiting for permanent registration.

30-Day Window. The buyer has 30 days to transfer the title at the county tax collector's office to avoid late fees.

Form HSMV 82050. Sellers should file a Notice of Sale to remove liability for the vehicle immediately after selling.
